Job Title: Industrial Hygienist

Location: Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia

Schedule / Terms of Employment: This is a full time (40 hours/week), permanent position

Primary Purpose

Reporting to the Director Health and Safety the Industrial Hygienist will work with all levels of the organization and function to inspire participation, cohesiveness, and synergy to the health program. Lead in the development and implementation of health and safety programs, meeting all Federal and Provincial regulatory requirements as a minimum, and company requirements with the site management team, operations, exploration, projects, and office. Reduce occupational health and safety related illnesses and injuries. Directly responsible for the implementation of the CCR Health and Safety strategy and business plans.

  • Manage, implement, and continuously improve CCR IH programs and Health and Safety Program
  • Develop, implement, and manage physical and chemical exposure monitoring and assessment programs and studies
  • Conduct investigations and evaluations at mine sites and offices in reference to hazardous chemical, physical, and biological agents
  • Evaluate, interpret, and manage data from exposure monitoring programs and studies
  • Evaluate effectiveness of engineering controls and make recommendations for continuous improvement
  • Collaborate with management, departments, employee representatives, and other agencies regarding industrial hygiene concerns and solutions
  • Summarize and communicate findings in technical reports
  • Provide support and leadership in developing and implementing policies and programs that address physical, chemical, and biological hazard concerns
  • Develop and conduct training on industrial hygiene concerns
  • Management and technical expertise on Safety Data Sheets
  • Other duties as assigned by the department head.

Education, Experience, and Qualifications

  • B.Sc. in Physical Sciences, Biological Sciences, or related Engineering degree
  • Minimum of 30 term credits in any combination of Biology, Chemistry, Engineering, Environmental Health, Health Physics, Industrial Hygiene, Physics, Physiology, or Toxicology.
  • One or more years of professional experience in the prevention of occupational diseases and the protection and improvement of the industrial health environment, or equivalent.

Technical Competencies and Skills

  • Fundamentals of chemistry, mathematics, physics, and engineering.
  • Industrial processes, equipment, and materials used in the workplace.
  • The principles of industrial hygiene and workplace hazards.
  • Scientific methods used in health hazard control.
  • Relationship between working conditions and health.
  • Techniques utilized in conducting industrial hygiene investigations.
  • The provincial industrial hygiene program.
  • Air sampling instruments, ventilation testing equipment and measuring devices for noise, lasers, and other physical agents.
  • Provincial and federal statutes and rules concerning industrial hygiene, radiation, and air pollution.
  • Ability to organize and interpret field data and identify necessary corrections.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise, and accurate investigative and narrative reports.
  • Ability to use testing and measuring equipment for noise, toxic substances, and harmful physical agents.
  • Ability to conduct studies and collect data to detect sources of industrial health hazards.
  • Prepare legal notices of violations.
  • Prepare cases for prosecution and appear in court as an expert witness.
  • Maintain records, and prepare reports and correspondence related to the work.
  • Quick learner and adaptable to an ever-changing environment.

Work Location / Travel

  • Transportation is provided from Tumbler Ridge, BC to work sites as required.
