Did you know that May was Mining Month in BC? Those living and working in British Columbia are familiar with Mining Week. This year, however, the Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC) claimed the entire month of May to be Mining Month. Many Chetwynd and Tumbler Ridge residents have their own reasons to celebrate Mining Month as an exciting future is developing for the two communities. In May, Conuma's Board of Directors was in town and thanked all of the more than 600 employees for their loyalty and dedication to the growth of Conuma. Each employee was given a family award as well as a loyalty bonus based on time employed with Conuma.
Among the many interesting things Conuma did during Mining Month were the High School Go-Cart races as well as two mine tours for high school students from Tumbler Ridge and Chetwynd. All of these activities focus on building youth leadership. In June Conuma will host Leadership Banquets for the high schools in both Chetwynd and Tumbler Ridge.

Another exciting May event was when Conuma hosted a group of South American women who were in Canada as part of a international program sponsored by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (Sustainable and Inclusive Communities in Latin America (CISAL). This delegation was taken on a tour of the mine and also had the opportunity to see first hand the numerous ways Conuma "pays it forward" to the communities in which they operate.

So, who is Conuma? In mid-2016, Conuma Coal Resources, a stand-alone, metallurgical coal producer bought and immediately re-started several idled properties in the South Peace area of BC and began moving towards providing long term stable employment for residents. Current surface mine operations at Brule and Wolverine produce more than four million tonnes annually and provide more than 600 jobs and security for families in the Peace River Regional District, with over 900 employees projected once the Willow Creek mine opens in July. What makes Conuma a different type of company? Conuma Coal Resources was founded to be a contributor, positive influence and supporter to the communities in which they operate. Conuma is committed to earning security for all of its partners, and to unifying resources and people to build a “first class” organization recognized for character and true integrity.

For Conuma, Mining Month meant celebrating its goal of being a blessing to the communities in which its employees live and work.
